Factors associated with the readiness for oral intake in post-extubated critically ill adult patients: A prospective observational study

المجلة: Nursing in critcal care

سنة النشر: 2024

تاريخ النشر: 2024-03-19

Post-extubation dysphagia (PED) is a common issue in adult patients who have been severely ill, leading to malnutrition and extended hospital and ICU admissions. A study involving 125 extubated patients used the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS) to assess readiness for oral intake. Factors such as age, BMI, smoking history, and longer stay in the ICU were linked to lower GUSS scores. Factors such as muscle relaxant usage, endotracheal and orogastric tube size, and frequency of intubation attempts increased predictability by 86.0%. Over 33% of patients with PED experience severe dysphagia, making it crucial to evaluate high-risk patients, use appropriate tubes, and minimize muscle relaxant administration to improve preparedness for oral intake.
