Characterization of Kidney’s Morphology in Patients With Sickle Cell Diseases Using Ultrasonography

المجلة: International Journal of Medical Science and Health Research

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of sickle cell diseases (SCD) on renal morphology by using ultrasonography. The method adapted was an experimental study among a sample consists of 115 SCD patients and 100 as control group. Grayscale ultrasonography of right and left kidneys performed among all patients and controls. All the patients were scanned instable state condition. The results analysis carried out by EXCELL software for the collected variables which revealed that: The disease (SCD) was higher in male than female (54.6% vs. 45.4% respectively). The renal volume decreased in patients with (SCD) while echogenicity of kidneys increased in 36.5% for right kidneys and 37.4% for left kidneys in (SCD) patients. The volumes of kidneys were decreased in patients with (SCD) relative to control group. The left kidney was slightly increased in echogenicity and enlarged than the right kidney

The Frequency of the v-AKT Murine Thymoma Viral Oncogene Homologue 1 Gene Amplification among Sudanese Women with Ovarian Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study

Protein kinase B (AKT/PKB) family is frequently amplified in ovarian cancer (OC). To the greatest of our knowledge, there is a lack of published reports about the amplification of the genes belonging to the AKT family among Sudanese women with OC. The present study was conducted to detect the AKT1 gene amplification and its association with tumour types, grades, and ages among Sudanese women with OC, bearing in mind the ethnic variation. Methods: This institution-based study included 79 cases of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer (OC) at Omdurman Maternity Hospital in the period 2013-2018. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections were used to extract RNA. AKT1 gene amplification was assessed using quantitative real-time PCR. Results: The mean age (±SD) of included women was 49.29 (±13.612). The amplification of AKT1 gene was observed in 18/79 (22.8%) of OC women, with a high frequency in women with undifferentiated 1/2 (50%), clear cell 2/6 (33.3%), mucinous 3/11 (27.3%), endometrioid 3/17 (17.6%), and serous carcinomas 5/30 OC (16.7%). High frequency was seen in women with low (26.3%; n = 10/28) rather than in higher (19.5%; n = 8/33) grade carcinoma, and in older (25.8%; n = 8/23) rather than younger (18.2%; n = 2/9) women. No significant association between AKT1 gene amplification and tumour types, grades, and ages of women was observed (Fisher’s Exact test: p = 0.405, 0.593 and 0.851, respectively). Conclusion: AKT1 gene amplification arises in around one-fifth of Sudanese women with ovarian cancer (OC). It is seen more in undifferentiated, clear cell, and mucinous tumours types, and more frequently in low tumour grade and older women, but not to a statistically significant level. These outcomes sustenance previous studies suggesting that activated AKT genes have a vital role in OC progression and may offer a plan for targeted therapy and prognostic evaluation.

Normative Reference Values of Abdominal Aortic Diameters of Sudanese Using Computed Tomography

Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is a standard tool for investigation of the abdominal aorta diseases. Currently, there are only a few published scientific articles devoted to the study of the infrarenal aortic size without pathology. The aims of this study were to use Computed Tomography (CT) to determine normal diameters for the suprarenal and infrarenal abdominal aorta in Sudanese population of asymptomatic, low-risk adult subjects and to study the variation in aortic diameters with age and gender. A total of 200 patients (108 males and 92 females) with a mean age of 48.6 years consecutive adults free of cardiac or aortic structural disease or arrhythmia who referred for abdominal CT scanning in the radiology department of Royal Care Hospital in Khartoum- Sudan during the period from August 2015 to May 2018. The mean internal diameters of the suprarenal and infrarenal abdominal aorta were measured at T12 and L3 vertebral levels and tabulated according to various age groups for both men and women. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the correlation between aortic diameters, with age and gender. The results of this study revealed that the mean diameter of the suprarenal abdominal aorta, measured at T12 vertebral level was19.44 mm in women and 20.97mm in men. The mean diameters of the infrarenal abdominal aorta, measured at L3 vertebral level were 14.13 mm. in women and 17.34 mm. in men. It concluded that normal dimensions abdominal aorta by CT scan was established and correlated with age and gender which is similar to previously published studies.

Evaluation of the Normal Inferior Vena Cava Diameters in Sudanese’s by Multidetector Computed Tomography

المجلة: IOSR Journal of Pharmacy and Biological Sciences

سنة النشر: 2018

تاريخ النشر: 2018-08-07

Knowledge of the normal Diameters of the Inferior Vena Cava is important regarding the detection of the abnormal and valuable in the treatment of patients with treatment of patients suffering from traumatic shock. The study was undertaken to evaluate, through computerized tomography, the diameters of the Inferior Vena Cava, as well as they, are connected to gender, age, and body surface area. A retrospective cohort study was performed at included 72 patients (41 males and 31 females) with a mean age of 47.2 years consecutive adults free of cardiac or aortic structural disease or arrhythmia who referred for abdominal CT scanning in the radiology department of Royal Care Hospital in Khartoum- Sudan during the period from August 2015 to May 2018. Anteroposterior (AP) and transverse (TV) diameters of the IVC were measured at the level of the renal vein. This study revealed that the mean± standard deviation (SD) of the anteroposterior (AP) diameter of the IVC in men measured was 25.471.69 mm, 24.151.58 in women. The mean± standard deviation (SD) of the transverse (TV) diameters, measured were 14.111.46 mm. in women and 15.31121.49919mm in men. It concluded that normal dimensions IVC by CT scan was established and correlated with age and gender, The information provided in this study will allow radiologists to detect and accurately characterize IVC abnormalities to guide clinical decision making and improve patient care. Recognition of IVC processes is essential to patient treatment, Future studies should focus on multicenter enrollment.
