Nursing Students’ Perception towards Team-Based Learning at Nile University, Sudan

Background: Team Based Learning is a student-centered approach which has been used in health professions education and has demonstrated effectiveness in promoting students’ learning, engagement, and application of knowledge. This study aims to assess undergraduate nursing students’ perception about Team Based Learning as an instructional strategy at Nile University. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among undergraduate nursing students at Nile University in Sudan. A structured questionnaire was filled out by 43 students out of 48 total students in cardiothoracic module, where five students refused to participate. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS. Results: The findings showed that nursing students had high level of agreement with Team Based Learning in all domains of study, the higher score was noted in learning and engagement and motivation (86.80% and 87.44% respectively). They demonstrated high positive perception on the usage of Team Based Learning in nursing education, P-value (0.00). Conclusion: It is concluded that nursing students have positive perception on the team-based learning method in surgical nursing course improved students’ learning behaviors; the more effect was in students' learning and communication skills in speaking English and transferring knowledge to others. Nursing teaching staff’ knowledge and attitude regarding peer assisted learning at governmental faculties of nursing, Khartoum state 2022

Introduction: Peer assisted learning (PAL) is nontraditional strategy of learning that has a lot of creativity and innovation used to assist others to learn, and so doing learning by themselves is more effective Methods: 93 nursing teaching staff completed an online questionnaire out of 108 nursing teaching staff which was recruiting in seven governmental faculties of nursing in Khartoum state at the time of the study, the response rate was 86% (93). Data were collected using structure questionnaire after validation is confirm, which explored nursing teaching staff’ knowledge about peer assisted learning. Frequencies distributions (mean, median, mode, SD. Minimum and maximum), weighted average to determine answer direction and one sample T test were used. Results: The study found that almost the nursing teaching staff responses significantly goes toward agree about the statement that test their knowledge about peer assisted learning as learning strategy, with (p value0.00). The study also showed that most of the nursing faculty did not use it in their teaching and learning strategies.Conclusion: Nursing teaching staff demonstrated positive knowledge and attitude towards peer assisted learning as learning strategy Keywords: Peer assisted learning (PAL) - Knowledge – Attitude – Nursing – Teaching staff - Governmental faculties of nursing.

Psychosocial Effects of Lockdown Measures on Sudanese Population during COVID-19 Pandemic 2020, Sudan

Background: Coronavirus pandemic is undeniably in the focus of worldwide attention, specific influences on the magnitude of negative psycho-socio-economic outcome. Aim: The study aims to explore the psychosocial effects of lockdown measures among the Sudanese population during the COVID-19 pandemic and the coping strategies used. Methods: A descriptive web-based method was used. The data were collected through the survey questionnaire designed on free Google forms software. A snowball technique was used to recruit the participants from different social media platforms. The data analyzed by (SPSS). Results: A total of 1811 Sudanese citizens were responded from different Sudan states. The findings revealed that the majority 53 % were experiencing fear of the unknown, frustration, and isolation, around 52 % feeling sad and depressed. Majority 64% reported reduced livelihood opportunities. 69% reported that the lockdown could negatively affect students ’academic performance. Some positive effects were identified among respondents including an increase in positive relationships within family members. The most coping strategies used was getting closer to God with prayers, reading the holy Quran. Engagement in physical exercise, follow all necessary instructions to protect themselves and others, 66% spending time on social media, connecting with others. The study indicated a significant association between psychological effects of lockdown on Sudanese people such as age, gender, and occupation. Also, a significant association between age, occupation, and source of income, and the social effect of lockdown. No significant association was found between socio-demographic data and coping strategies. Conclusion: Our study concluded that the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic had indeed adversely affected the majority of Sudanese respondents in psychological, social, and economic well-being. Different positive coping strategies used to reduce the stress and to adapt to the situation. Researchers in this study suggested expansion of effective counseling, mental health and social services for Sudanese communities.

Nursing Students’ Perception about Peer Assisted Learning and Seminar in Pediatric Nursing at International University of Africa, Sudan

In nursing education, a variety of small group teaching approaches are employed to improve students learning and motivate them to actively participate in the teaching and learning process. Peer Assisted Learning has recently grown in popularity and gained substantial interest. This study aimed to explore the perception of nursing students about Peer Assisted Learning and Seminar method in paediatric nursing. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted. All The ninety students in semester seven paediatric nursing course were enrolled. A semi- structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. SPSS version 23 was used to analyse the data which then expressed in frequencies and percentages, mean, weighted mean, and SD. qualitative data were analyzed, and key themes were identified. Results: the findings showed that all students reported a greater positive perception in Peer Assisted Learning than Seminar in development of learning - teaching skills with mean score of 4.30, 3.66 respectively. Collaboration and interaction, the repose mean score of 4.27 and 3.43 respectively, learning environment the repose mean score of 4.40, 3.61 respectively. Students perceived Peer Assisted Learning as a more effective and favourable method for paediatric nursing in their comments in terms of improving their learning–teaching skills. Self-confidence, self-reflection, communication and demonstration skills, and motivating, enjoyable learning environment. Conclusion: Peer Assisted Learning had remarkable benefits as teaching / learning method comparing to Seminar among nursing students. It could be incorporated in the nursing curriculum.

Effectiveness of a Family Planning Education Program on Contraceptive Utilization among Women in Sudan- a Quasi Experimental Study

While family planning services play a crucial role in preserving maternal health and mitigating maternal mortality rates, Sudan, despite its integration into the primary healthcare system since 1985, continues to grapple with elevated maternal mortality rates, coupled with persistently low utilization rates. Aim of the study: The purpose of this study was designed to assess the impact of a family planning education program on contraceptive utilization rate among women in Sudan. Methodology: A quasi experimental study was used to achieve the aim of the study. Cluster sample technique was used to involve 456 reproductive-age women. This study was carried out in two local area at Khartoum north locality in Khartoum state (Aldaroshab and Alkadro area). Aldaroshab Area was randomly selected to act as the intervention group. Alkadro Area was acted as a control group, data was collected using a questionnaire consisting of 30 questions covering different aspects of family planning. Participants were divided into experimental and control groups, and pre-and posttests were conducted to determine the utilization rate, the data were entered into SPSS version 23 for analysis, p-value <0.05. Results: The study found significant increase in the level of utilization rate of the studied population regarding family planning after attendance of the educational program. The use of the participants family planning methods was 114(50%) of them at pre intervention measurement and by 190(83.3%) at post intervention measurement. (P = 0.001 < 0.05). The utilization of natural methods, contraceptive pills, and injectable methods has significantly increased from (5.2%, 26.2% and 5.3%) to (15.4%, 34.2% and 15.8%) respectively. Conclusions: The study concludes that a family planning education program significantly increases the level of contraceptive utilization rate in Sudan. Recommendation: Simplification and maximum utilization of the family planning health education programs

Outcomes of Labour based on Cardiotocography Categories: Donabedian Model Approach

Many factors are crucial to be considered when determining labor outcomes and mode of giving births for pregnant women. The aim of the study: The current study aimed to investigate the correlation between cardiovascular imaging categories and determining the labor outcome based on Donabedian model approach.. Methodology: A correlational and descriptive study design was adopted in the labor room at maternal and children hospital (MCH) in Najran-Saudi Arabia. A purposive sampling technique was utilized for recruiting a total of 390 full term pregnant ladies at labor stag with specific inclusion criteria. A self- reported questionnaire, besides check-list was used for collecting data. Results: The age of the participants ranged between 18 and 41 years, with a mean of 26.2 ±6.1 years. Gravidity ranged between 1 and 7, with a mean of 2.7 ±3.1. Moreover, parity ranged between 1 and 8, with a mean of 1.9 ±1.8. The observed delivery mode was spontaneous normal vaginal delivery for 43.1%, followed by emergency cesarean section for 26.7%, while the least reported mode was vacuum-assisted (instrumental) vaginal birth for 9.2% of the participants. CTG was determined to be 86% for category I, 9% for category II, while category III was estimated for 5% respectively. Most of the newborns 362 (92.8%) had 7-10 Apgar scores in 1st minute, and almost 96% of them had 7-10 Apgar scores in the 5th minute. Only 7.2% (n=28) of newborns had been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Mode of delivery, Apgar score at first minute, and admission to NICU were significantly associated with the CTG categories (P= 0.001, 0.045 & 0.012). Conclusion & recommendation: CTG categories were significantly related to labour outcomes in terms of mode of delivery, Apgar score at first minute, and thus NICU admission. For increasing CTG efficiency, continuous training is crucial for obstetricians and midwives on how to interpret CTGs and to escalate when there are concerns.

Assessment of Clinical Setting Related Stressors Perceived by Nursing Students in Najran University –Saudi Arabia

Baccalaureate nursing students often experience high levels of stress during training that may result in psychological or emotional impairment during their professional life that might ultimately affects the quality of patient care they provide. Aim of the study: to assess the clinical setting related stressors perceived by nursing students in Najran University. Methodology: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study. A convenient sampling technique was adopted for recruiting 141 subjects to participate in the current study was used to assess the clinical setting related stressors among nursing students at the University of Najran. A self-administered questionnaire was utilized for collecting data. Descriptive analysis was followed for assessing the stressors that perceived by students, while Chi-square test was used for determining the associations with risk factors and some variables. Results: about (29.8%) of participants reported that anxiety was the most common emotional symptoms that nursing students suffered, (46.1%) of them had moderate stress level, and there was a highly statistically significant correlation between stress scale and students' clinical experience and enough preparation for the clinical practice significant negative correlation was observed between stress scale and students' opinion about clinical practice (r= -0.499, p=0. 01**),(r= -0.502, p=0. 01**). significant positive correlations are found between Student opinion about clinical practice, Enjoyable clinical experience and prepared for the clinical practice (r= 0.399, p=0. 05*), (r= r. 0.328, p=0. 05*) respectively. Conclusion and recommendation: Less than half of nursing students had moderate stress level in regard to clinical practice. Recommendation: A stress management programs along with good preparation for students before initiating clinical practices with continuing supervision until graduation is highly advisable.
