Dietary/Exercise Guiding Program for Improvement of Nursing Students Body Image, Self-Esteem and Overweight Prevention: A Randomized Controlled study

Background: Over weight is worldwide problem that threaten both physical and psychological health of female nursing students. Healthy promotion program as regular exercise and healthy diet will provide positive outcomes. Design: A randomized controlled trial design (pre- post and at one month follow up) used in this study. Sample: A purposive sample of 50 female nursing students divided into 2 groups are participated in this study. (25 student for diet and exercise group and other 25 students for exercise alone group). Setting: The study was carried out at the gymnasium of faculty of nursing -Cairo University. Tools: three tools for data collection were used: Personal data characteristics, Body image scale & Self-esteem scale. Results: The results showed that there was a highly significant difference among total score of diet, exercise, body image and self-esteem group (1) and total score of exercise, body image and self-esteem group (2) respectively before and after implementation the program and one month follow up. Conclusions: The study concluded that the program has effectively reduced unhealthy behaviors of sampled college students and did improve their diet and exercise regiments as well as body image and self-esteem. Recommendation: Therefore, continuous dissemination through healthy promotion programs to bring about healthy life style behavior both in physical and psychological terms is recommended for the faculty students

The Relationship among Emotional Intelligence, Optimistic Personality, and Intern Students’ Academic Achievement

ackground: The demand and changes in the healthcare environment raised the bar for nursing competency in the clinical setting, which affected the standard of nursing education. Therefore, emotional intelligence in conjunction with an optimistic personality significantly affects healthcare workers' mental function and capabilities to face the increasing workplace turbulence that consequently influences their academic achievement. Aim: The present study aimed to explore the relationship between emotional intelligence, optimistic personality, and intern nursing students' academic achievement. Design: A descriptive- correlational design was used in this study. Setting: This study was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing – Cairo University, Egypt. Sample: A convenience sample of 202 intern nursing students participated in the research study. Tools: three tools were utilized during the study; the first tool was a demographic and academic datasheet; The second tool was The Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) and the third tool was The Life Orientation Test-Revised Scheier and Carver (LOT-R). Results: The current study results showed that there was a positive correlation between emotional intelligence, optimistic personality, and academic achievement. Conclusion: The study concluded that the majority of intern nursing students had high EI, optimism, and academic achievement. There is a positive significant correlation between EI, optimism, and academic achievement. Recommendations: This study recommended the initiation and sustaining of the improvement of the students ‘emotional intelligence and optimism within the scientific and community environment through proper strategies acting as a basic section of undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula to be essential in transitioning the students into the business world.

Parents’ Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Dyslexia: Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Dyslexia is a vague hidden disorder that interferes with children's learning process. Parents are the primary caregivers for their children and have a great influence on their children's academic success. Unfortunately, the majority of them do not have the appropriate knowledge to assist their children, impacting negatively on the parents, the child and the whole family. Parents' awareness of dyslexia and its impact on their children is imperative in ensuring the sustainable development of the children. Aim: The present study aimed to assess parents’ knowledge and attitudes regarding dyslexia among their children. Design: A cross-sectional survey design was utilized in the current study. Setting: The study was conducted in EtayAlbaroad General Hospital outpatient clinics. Sample: A convenient sample of 952 parents participated in the current survey over two months. Tools: Two tools were utilized during the study; the first tool was a dyslexia knowledge questionnaire, which was divided into two parts: part one: parents' sociodemographic data, and part two: parents' knowledge about dyslexia. The second tool was a structured attitude scale. Results: The current study results showed that more than half of parents had unsatisfactory level of knowledge toward their children’s dyslexia and the majority of them had a negative attitude toward their children’s dyslexia. Moreover, there were a highly statistical significant relation between knowledge and attitude among dyslexic children's parents. Conclusion: The study concluded that parents didn’t have enough knowledge to start early intervention which affected their attitude toward their children, and there weren’t suitable, accessible, and affordable governmental places to educate parents about all learning disabilities. Recommendations: Develop wide policies and practices by the Egyptian Ministry of Health that suggest setting up educational intervention programs is important considering parental awareness, needs, and resources, thus moving, within a systemic perspective, from an individual-cantered to a family-centered care viewpoint
